Ainol is not a Chinese maker of flimsy junk like Augen, Element and GPX Brands. Chinese Ainol makes quality 7" tablets Their first Android 4.0 ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) 7" tablets were 2011 released Novo 7 Paladin, Novo 7 Advanced, & Novo 7 Advanced II. Then came the 2012 Novo 7 Elf and the Newest is the Novo 7 Aurora.
In appearance and most internals, they are the same tablet with enhancements. The Elf has more RAM, 1GB DDR3 instead of 512MB DDR2,and 1024 X 600 display. The Advanced II is a good performer. The Elf just performs better due to double the RAM and it has a noticeably better display. The newest model is the Aurora which differs from the Elf only in display technology. The Aurora has an IPS display but average street price is about $225.
I own the Advanced II. It is important for most buyers that you buy an Ainol from a seller who makes some adjustments, such as resets the language from Chinese to English and sees to it the Android ICS is upgraded to at least 4.03 (4.0 and 4.01 has glitches that freeze Android when you are online. Since all the documentation is Chinese, USA buyers do not want to have to hard reboot the Tablet to unfreeze it, as it will revert back to Chinese. You want the seller to also install and insure that Android Market works or you may be unable to install apps.
The seller here at Amazon does just that. I bought mine from an eBay seller who modifies his Ainols. These tablets are popular enough with enthusiasts that they have an ongoing manual translation project. Most of the manual is translated into English, which greatly widens who can reasonably learn to use them. I had to work completely in the dark, being new to Android and somewhat new to Tablet devices but I am not new to Windows or Linux; I use an HP Touchpad and prefer the stability of WebOS to the less stable & unstandardized Android OS (it varies from device to device).
I researched, then bought the Novo 7 Advanced because I am tired of waiting for a USA brand to release a Android 4.0 tablet and the price of the Ainol is much lower than many inferior 7" tablets sold here. I was not disappointed! As I figured, 800 X 480 is fine for a 7" display and the Chinese Processor (Allwinner A9, 1.2GHz) & GPU is fast. The browser & mic are significantly better than in my Touchpad. Everything works and it works well. Netflix movies play flawlessly! The tiny stereo speakers are adequate;Headphone audio is excellent. Generic USB Android keyboards plug & play work well. I use SKYPE and I am impressed with how good this tablet is for telephone over Internet use! My 8 year-old granddaughter fell in love with my Ainol immediately. Her experience is limited to some messing around with her father's HTC Evo cell phone. I was surprised how far she got into using the Advanced II. In just a few minutes, She was online playing her favorite Barbie dress up program. And I thought she would not get how to work this Android device!
The low prices of Ainol tablets can be misleading. They are quality build tablets and they work well, provided you have Android updated and Android Market pre-installed. You can get the translated manual (uplaytablet dot com slash ainol-novo-7-elf-and-novo-7-aurora-english-manual). Its not exactly for the Advanced II but you can learn a lot from it. (Please excuse the odd way I provided the address. Amazon doesn't allow links.)
Ainol is not for everyone. People who find using their Windows laptop challenging may not want to risk buying one. They do require a little computing savy.
Warning. Avoid the temptation to buy one of these from a China or Hongkong eBay seller for $104 to $110. It is very risky to buy from a China based seller. It may take a few months to arrive and it may never arrive. The Chinese Postal Service is inefficiant and corruption plagued. The websites like Focalprice, Redtablet, Tabletrepublic hide the fact they are China based sellers. There are many complaints about them at sites like Resellerratings. Also beware of a new "Drop Ship" trick where a front seller sells for a tiny percentage but the item is still shipped from China. Until 2011 you could expect good to excellent results buying from a Hongkong seller but presently China sellers fake selling from Hongkong (or Sinapore) by having an agent open an order office there misleading buyers into thinking the product is there and ships from Hongkong. Its wiser to pay a little more to a USA seller who will also update it, insures Android Market works and sets it to English language.
Lastly, seriously consider buying a Square Trade warranty. For a reasonable charge you can get a 2-year warranty that is real. In event of a failure you mail the device to their repair facility. If it cannot be repaired they refund your entire purchase price. Square Trade pays postage both ways. The Ainol one-year warranty is impractical from USA, as postage to China is high.
